We've all been there...

There you are, cross legged, phone silenced, partner out of the house, background noise minimized... you re in a chilled mood, you're feeling good...you're meditating and you 're not even making an effort..it's all happening, you're in the flow.

Long practice gap, then...

... somewhere further down the line you catch yourself wondering...

“Where the heck did I just go”?!

And before you know it, you realise that 30 minutes of your life have just disappeared... you don't even remember meditating. You could have been abducted by aliens for all you know.

Bottom line is, you found yourself coming out of meditation, realising that whilst at it, you were in a space you simply can't recognise or have words for.

You don't remember being 'in the zone'....
you don't recall NOT being 'in the zone'...
it was not resembling a peak state..
you were not have any sort of epiphany...
it didnt feel like anything you know of or recognize...
It was a 'no space' kind of space...
No boxes to fit it in or anything to compare it with...
no points of reference for this type of experience...

                                                     So, the question is...

How Do We Relate to An Experience Like This?

There are going to be times in our meditation practice, when we're going to have this kind of experience of not recollecting ourselves at all, and it's important to approach this the right way.

You see, this experience doesn't have to make sense with the rational 'meditator's mind'.

Reason being is this:

When we Lose our Mind in Meditation ,

it Tends to Happen for a Good Reason,

so Don't Rush Bringing it Back.

It's understandable as a meditator to want to dig in and work out what has happened when we 'lose our mind' and our grip on our awareness during practice, yet this desire to know where we have been, can also be another thing holding us back that we might need to let go of.

This kind of experience has in fact
happened to me a few times.

Below are some of my insights and findings from having 'lost my bearings' during meditation practice – metaphysically speaking.

  • Entering into these un-structured, abstract landscapes, is an indication we are moving into deeper as well as new, explored & un-found lands within our human mind and psyche. It's often something that happens to new meditators or when we have entered a deep space in our practice.

  • We often enter in this new space, for our higher self to explore new states of knowing and awareness. As a result, our conscious self slides away to make way to our subconscious.
  • This new space tends to be a creative one, from which we naturally get reinvented into updated versions of ourselves and our higher self tends to facilitate this process.

  • When the mind surrenders, that gives our spirit full consciousness access, for it to roam free.
  • Where this experience is an indication of expansion into new levels of awareness, you will often find your soul and spirit feeling more alive and kicking.

  • You come out of meditation practice to find yourself breathing and being one with the breeze/ wind...You feel connected with the movement of the trees, and somehow the silence of things seems to make more sense. You don't seem to want to rely on what is being seen only by your external eye and heard by your physical ear alone. The mystery of things has become deeper and more tangible and YOU are part of it. In those moments ...

                                                            All we need to do
                                               is allow the mystery
                                             of esoteric experience
unfold in its own unique way,
and for us to get lost in its wonder.

                                                                            .............

So what are you to do to make the most out of accessing those kind of blank canvas type deep spaces in your meditation experience
?

  • Do not try to box the experience into ANYTHING at all.

  • Breath into that space and FEEL your way through it.

  • Do not rationalise it, just surrender yourself to this new space, as your being is expanding beyond what you had been familiar with up to that point and you step out of your comfort zone.

  • Trust in what is happening, whatever boggles the mind is good for BOTH your spirit AND soul.

  • Understand that your consciousness has been in the process of expanding to a new limitless space.

  • Resist to revive or 'bring back' the mind from its surrender too soon after, instead, let it come back naturally and gradually with minimum force and effort. It takes time for the dust to settle.

  • By having no points of reference for this out-of-the box experience and by letting it  be without trying to define it, will help shift your perception levels in new heights where the vastness of the universe is your only limit.

However, something to check and be cautious of:

When and if we happen to 'lose our bearings' during meditation practice, it's wise to check with ourselves first that this event has not been a direct experience of avoiding our emotions and experience. We all at times take flight unconsciously from ourselves, as a way of avoiding accessing challenging places within us and so it's always a good idea that we check it out.

To find out if that was the case, we only need to look at what was going on for us prior our meditation practice that day, or at that period in our life... if there is an event standing out that causes us difficulty and upset, it might be that we had 'lost our bearings' and taken flight in avoidance of our emotions.

If that has been the case for you, then just notice it and bring yourself back.

But in all other cases remember...

Just because we don't understand everything
that we end up experiencing in meditation practice, doesnt mean that it's not being of use and benefit for our soul and spirit. We simply need to learn to work with those experiences in a less rational and more creative way, in order to make the most out of it.

Amazing right?
